Take a good number of shots, composing each shot within a single section of the viewfinder grid. Don’t bother about the rest of the frame!
As advised in the preamble to the project, my camera was set to auto mode for this exercise. I used a zoom lens and adjusted the focal distance for each image as seemed appropriate to fit the object neatly into the grid section I had allocated to it. These individual images do, I feel, all have a sense of balance in their composition.
In retrospect, however, and as now seems blindingly obvious, I should have kept the same focal distance throughout the series in order to maintain a consistent sense of scale and proportion – but because I adjusted the focal distance each time, the composite (below) doesn’t work as well as it would have done had I stuck to the same scale throughout.
