Stephen Gill: Hackney Wick

Once I had decided to look for my decisive moments for assignment 3 in an urban setting and was therefore venturing into the realm of street photography, I took a good look at Stephen Gill’s photographs of the market at Hackney Wick, which confirmed that images don’t have to include anything particularly dramatic or sudden to capture a moment and the essence of place and time. Neither do they even have to be in sharp focus… Gill made these images with a camera with a plastic lens and no focus or exposure controls, which he bought at the market for 50p.
